Boiler Room

Grade: B-

I clearly will never be a stockbroker. They could have done a much better job explaining this stuff, and Giovanni Ribisi is way more believable playing mentally challenged than he is here (major miscasting), but Ben Affleck does a nice turn against type as a foul mouthed recruiter. The film is filled with tension and never boring. I’ve never been a “Wall Street” fan (which is recalled to very nice effect in a scene where everyone has managed to memorize Michael Douglass’ dialogue), but this one worked for me. Favorite exchange occurs when the traders go to a Manhattan restaurant, and tell a group of gay men that they should all be rounded up and placed on an island somewhere. “They did,” one responds, “You’re on it.”
