The Pledge

Grade: C-

Jack Nicholson turns in a nice performance as a retired officer who just can't let go of his final case. Unfortunately, the film moves in painfully s l o w motion, as Director Sean Penn strives to make every single shot memorable, and every moment important -- which they're not. Interesting concept, as the audience struggles to figure out whether the film is truly about the murder case, or rather about a man on the verge of a meltdown, but there simply is not enough information to help us draw a worthwhile conclusion. Not unlike "The Gift," a multitude of names show up to deliver cameos, many of them playing the same backwater types we saw in that other movie. Marginally interesting, but ultimately a pretty empty experience.
