Rock Star

Grade: D+
This one is about as deep as the “Johnny Bravo” episode on “The Brady Bunch.” A made for TV screenplay that is never interesting, smart, or creative – it is so pat and predictable it hurts. Mark Wahlberg, who showed so much promise in “The Three Kings,” has turned in two of the blandest, most uninteresting performances of the year – first in “Apes” and now this. His “gee golly willickers” persona is entirely too one-note, never changes, and manages to get irritating oh so quickly. Wahlberg is himself a former pop star, yet never for a moment feels comfortable or real playing one. Even his body is surprisingly bland and uninteresting. Poor Jennifer Aniston has a terrible agent – she has yet to find a role outside of “Friends” with even the slightest bit of depth or interest. If “Almost Famous” was the Rolls Royce of “Rock & Roll on the Road” movies, than this one is a rusty, used Chevette – tires missing and up on cinder blocks.
