Waking the Dead

Grade: C+

Billy Crudup may well be the best actor working today – he just never seems to turn in a false performance, even with mediocre screenplays like this one. Very well meaning, but the whole just isn’t up to the sum of it’s parts. Is his girlfriend truly dead and is he simply unable to deal with her death, or did she go underground and is he really seeing her everywhere? Can one make real change by living up to destiny and working within the system, or does one have to work outside to be truly noble? But, is it noble to leave the one you love behind and in total despair? Crudup is great as both a young and idealistic boyfriend and as an older politician unable to shake his mourning for lost love. But the movie kind of sits there, and nobody else in the film matters in the slightest.
