Monsoon Wedding

Grade: B-

Poor production values, mediocre camera work, uneven performances and incomplete storytelling somehow only add to the simple charm of this big hearted picture. If the same story were set in the United States, this would have been one pretty uninteresting, “been there, done that” experience -- after all, how many more "against a wedding backdrop, family members argue, fight, woo one another, laugh, cry, reveal dark secrets, then come together to rejoice in the love of family" movies can one be expected to endure? But this is set in India, and there is such richness and uniqueness in the culture, religion, and family relationships, that sweetness and fascination overcome a fairly thin plotline. Not exactly a knockout of a movie, but a pleasant couple of hours in the movie-thin days of February.
